We publish one issue annually in late spring. We open for submissions starting November 1, 2023 and close on February 29, 2024, allowing for a print production date in early May.

Levitate aims to be inclusive, both in terms of the authors and the types of work we accept. We want to create a safe and comfortable place for writers of all backgrounds and languages. We recognize that the writing industry has been predominantly white and we aim to lift up the voices of writers of color, as well as other marginalized communities. We recognize that everyone deserves for their voice to be heard, and we believe that it’s important that writers at various stages of their careers are given the opportunity to showcase their work and the perspective it shows. Levitate accepts all genres of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and visual art, and is also accepting work under the theme “Insomnia” for our Issue 8 themed dossier.

Please upload one prose piece, up to three poems, or up to five artworks per submission. When submitting to Levitate, include a short bio with your submission. Do not submit multiple times to the same genre. However, simultaneous submissions are accepted across genres if only once, for example one submission for creative nonfiction and one submission for poetry. If you submit in more than one genre, please include that information in your cover letter.

The title of your submission should be the title(s) of your piece(s). Submissions that fail to follow the guidelines will not receive the same careful attention that is given to correctly submitted work.

This year’s theme for the dossier is Insomnia. Insomnia is defined as not sleeping when you should, but it’s more than that. The thoughts that come out at night can be both profound and existential, keeping us awake when no one else is around. At this darkest hour, the moon’s secrets are unveiled and things may no longer be what they seem, almost surreal. Shadows morph in the corners of our eyes, stirring the imagination to run wild with intrigue. We seek out pieces that arise in the dead of night when the stars are at their brightest and the mind is entranced with their beauty.

Contributors will receive one free copy of the online issue if located in the United States.
